I decided earlier in my life that I wanted to buy an RX-7. I was set on it! Rotary, rotary, rotary!!! That is all I ever talked about! That sweet sweet sound of a buzzing engine going about! Back-firing bliss with some beautiful revving to go along with it. When the time came, that was what I was going to buy....

.... then a 2001 Suzuki SV650S with only 7,500 miles on it came along and I bought it for $1,700. It needs work, but thanks to my awesome brother who is a motorcycle mechanic, he got the thing ride-worthy... ish. It needs rear disk and pads, fork seals, rear tire, and fairings (optional at this point). Here is the bike in pieces right now.

I don’t see why you can’t put a rotary into the bike to make a modern RE5.

Kinja'd!!!

Though if you miraculously found a $1700 one, good luck getting it working.

Rotary engines produce a lot of heat, and the RE5 had water- and oil-cooling, and double-skinned exhaust pipes. Ignition was CDI, with two sets of ignition points actuated via vacuum and rpm sensors, to light a solitary NGK spark plug. Three oil reservoirs served the sump, gearbox and total loss tank. Separate oil pumps fed (respectively) the main bearings and the inlet tracts (to lubricate tip seals). The throttle controlled both the primary carburetor butterfly and a second valve in the inlet manifold of the secondary throat (the “port” valve), as well as governing oil supply to the combustion chamber. Suzuki used peripheral ports for the RE5, as they give better high-speed running but are known to have low-speed issues. This was addressed by using a complicated two-stage five-circuit Mikuni carburetor with built-in fuel pump. Five cables in total were moved by the throttle twist grip.

Should have put an RX7 into the mix when I bought my last car (‘97 SHO) - SVX, 300ZX, Supra, Mustang, all in the mix. Where did I go wrong?

It sounds so nice! But, let’s take a look at the deal. $1,700 for a running bike. It wouldn’t run while staying in gear because of a plugged up carburetor, but that has since been cleaned and the bike behaves perfectly. So far, I’ve only gotten sliders for it and gotten myself a helmet, so add $200 to it (got a discount on the helmet cause I know a guy). The guy I know who works at a motorcycle shop has given me a deal for $400 worth of the remaining parts and tires for it. Fairings will be an extra $500 online making a total of $2,800. Not bad considering how old the bike is.

EDIT: forgot about the pants. $150. My brother gave me some old gear, so I’m good on some stuff. So, $2,950, or roughly $3,000.

At this point, we only buy a car if we move out of NYC. If that happens (it won’t) my plan is a Cayman S or Boxster S - I can put it into full auto and convince SigOther that it’s an easy car to drive - no open car issues (she hates convertibles).

Cayman might be a better buy compared to an RX-7, honestly. Sorry you won’t be able to move out of NYC, but is it possible for you to get a weekend car?

Not bad at all. You came out alright with your stuff and the SV650 is a popular and well-liked bike.

I’m just being an asshole and taunting you with a rotary Suzuki because... well, just because really.

As of right now, I cannot find the brand. It starts with an M, the logo is red, and the only reason why I flipped over the exhaust is because the side with the logo is all sratched up. Oh, I forgot to mention the previous owner may have laid the bike down at a low speed; the fairing, rear seat cover, and the exhaust took all the damage... thankfully!

its really not that hard. Only reason mine was has hard as it ended up being was because of the ABS unit.

seeing as you have a first gen (curvy) you will need a special bearing to get the GSX-R forks to drop in. Other then that, its really straight forward. here is link to the build up I did on mine: (3 part read)

Good thing it is pretty straightforward. I’m right now trying to get some better suspension for it and make it fully road worthy, but a full rear end GSXR swap sounds like a future plan.

also, another thing....

PLEASE for the love of god keep the fairing. I’m seeing too make guy ditching them and throwing them out because they want the naked look.

why didnt you just get a naked to start with? #savetheS

front end* I know you can swap the rear wheel off a GSXR for a 180 tire, but its not really worth it IMO

I found this S for cheap and thought, “Why not?” I want to replace the fairings since going naked seems to be a norm. Also, the fairings look pretty sharp.
